Reciting Our ABC's for the Ronald McDonald Friends

Reciting ABCs

For the past nine years, Viking Elementary has  supported and helped the families that stay at the Ronald McDonald House in Rochester  with a very special service project!  This year we chose to do the ABC’s for household products.  The grocery bags for all the ABC’s were filled to the top with wonderful donations.

At the February 29th Assembly, we recited the ABC’s and presented all the donations to Judy Berg, the Human Resources Manager for the Courtesy Corporation for McDonalds  who will deliver them to the Ronald McDonald House.

We have so much to be thankful for; it is nice to give hope to those who need it!  Thank you so much for supporting our service project at Viking!!  We are proud of our Viking students and families.

Guardian Angels Brighten the Day for Families

SamanthaSamantha Engel and her family stayed at the Ronald McDonald House when she had surgery to repair a problem with her heart when she was 4 years old. Now, Samantha is 10 years old and she is doing great. Samantha remembers and appreciates the support that her family felt when they stayed here. Samantha was recently elected “Governor” of her class and one of her duties with this position is to develop and lead a class activity. She wanted to do something for the sick children at the Ronald McDonald house because "she knows how they feel and what they are going through".

Samantha asked her class to write a letter/card to the children that were staying at the Ronald McDonald House. She also took a $1.00 donation from each student and purchased 20 guardian angel pins to send with the letters. Samantha's class continues to periodically send letters and cards to the children and is also collecting pop tabs.

Thank you so much Samantha! We really appreciate your caring spirit and love of the children and families here!

During the month of April, the Playground Mentors at Riverside Central Elementary School hosted a pop tab collection for the Ronald McDonald House in Rochester.

Classes were challenged to bring in as many as possible and the class with the most in weight  earned a pizza party. The students delivered containers to each classroom and then collected and did the weigh in. Mrs. Neher’s class won by far with 18 ½ pounds of pop tabs.  All together Riverside donated 76 pounds of pop tabs!

Mrs. Hutchins &  Johanna, a student at Riverside, were part of the team that delivered the tabs to the House at the Cans for Kids Collection Day, Saturday, May 17th.

Playground Mentors also enjoyed viewing the DVD from the Ronald McDonald House to see how their donations would be helping others.  Playground Mentor’s are trained to help students resolve conflicts peacefully on the playground.  They use a tool called the Win Win game, which involves a 5 step process for solving conflicts.  Each classroom has this tool and students are taught the process through classroom counseling lessons.

Thank you Riverside and to all who dropped of their aluminum donations this spring.  We hope to see you October 4th!
